Using Power over Ethernet

The Phylink outdoor camera has the capability to be Powered over Ethernet. This allows you to reduce the number of cables trailing from your camera, as well as give your camera a stable power and network connection with one cable.

However, you are not simply able to connect an Ethernet cable from your router to the camera, as your router will not normally be providing power into the cable. As such, you will need to use either a PoE injector or a PoE switch to provide the cable with power. This device would then go in between the router and the camera.

A PoE injector typically has one Ethernet port, meaning that it would be useful if you have just one camera. If you are looking into to power multiple cameras over Ethernet, then it might be worth opting for a PoE switch, which will have multiple ports for cameras.

You can purchase whichever model would suit you best. The only specifications to look out for are that the injector/switch is 802.3af compliant and that it can match each camera’s PoE power consumption of 13 W.

Powering the camera with PoE allows a cable length of up to 300 ft. It is very suitable for the installation locations where there is no power outlet and Wi-Fi signal.
